The straight facts about immunizations
IMMUNIZATIONS:
Of all medical advances in the 20th Century more lives have been saved by immunizations. In fact we should celebrate this incredible accomplishment. Sometimes our greatest successes give rise to new challenges. Today, with high immunization rates and the reduction of terrible illnesses such as whooping cough, measles, polio, meningitis and pneumonia, the focus has been on media generated fear and false ideas.
Sadly, in recent years the growing concern of too many people has resulted in a decrease in the acceptance of immunization. The consequences are now beginning to be seen with a rise in all of these preventable diseases. In fact, recent data shows that vaccine refusers have a 35 fold increase risk of measles, a 23 fold increase in pertussis (whooping cough), and a 9 fold increase in varicella (chickenpox) in contrast with those who immunize their children. The consequences of developing any of these illnesses can be severe, including permanent disability and death.
An immunized community is a safe community. If you have friends or family who refuse immunizations, it is important to recognize that it places all of us at risk, with special concern for many of our children and families who have underlying serious medical conditions. By working together, we hope to continue the advances that have been made with the goal that one day these illnesses will be eliminated permanently.

FLU SEASON IS HERE ALREADY IN SOUTH FLORIDA
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children from age 6months to 18 years old receive flu vaccine. This season is projected to be more severe than last year. In the State of Florida, there were 8 pediatric deaths reported last year, and that was a mild season. Our office is currently administering flu vaccine. If you haven’t done so already, please call and schedule an appointment for this valuable vaccine.
